The owners of Downs House are aiming to turn the historic facility into Epsom’s flagship yard after a multi-million pound redevelopment cleared the final planning stage on Thursday.

Situated beside the racecourse, the late 18th century site was home to the legendary Eclipse, while the likes of Be Friendly and Running Stag were also trained from there.

More recently the yard has fallen into disrepair and ceased to be an active training stables. However, Mark Travers and Andrew Lynds of Eclipse Barn Racing, who bought the yard from the council in 2015, plan to revive the fortunes of Downs House with renovation work set to begin in the spring following approval from Epsom & Ewell Borough Council.
