The Queen paid her annual private visit to Newmarket last Tuesday to see her horses in training in the town with Sir Michael Stoute, William Haggas, Michael Bell and, this year, John Gosden.

The last-named has received royal patronage for the first time this season and was happy to show off his two royal juvenile colts: Gold Stick (by Dubawi) and Pianissimo (by Teofilo).

The Queen was on hand to watch her horses with Bell perform on the Cambridge Road Polytrack on Racecourse Side, with those under inspection including her useful sprinter Merlin.
