Bielsa's march to Ayr Gold Cup victory a boost to 66 lucky stables
With many of the game’s protagonists resting easy following their exploits at Doncaster and Leopardstown the previous week, it was left to Ayr Gold Cup winner Bielsa to fly the flag for his 66 lucky stables.
The Kevin Ryan-trained six-year-old claimed 22.20 points after an impressive performance which saw jockey Kevin Stott plough a lone furrow up the nearside rail, and a step into Group company could now be next.
Prior to that, Maydanny picked up 19.5 points for his win in the Doonside Cup, while the biggest scorer of the weekend was Staxton. He landed 46.90 points for his Silver Cup win, helped in no small part by his £30.20 return on the win pools.
We may have seen movement at the business end of the leaderboard this week were it not for Al Aasy’s disappointing run in the Group 3 Legacy Cup. Instead, the honours went to Solid Stone who took his tally to a commendable 68 points for the 40 stables who selected him.
Over in Ireland, we saw one point scorer at Gowran Park as Carrytheone won with authority on his second start of the season. Selected by just four stables, the Johnny Murtagh-trained gelding could have some nice options over the autumn to add to his 14.30 points.
The only Ten to Follow top-level victory this weekend came in Canada as Charlie Appleby and Frankie Dettori were rewarded for a trip across the Atlantic in the Grade 1 Canadian International. Godolphin’s Walton Street, who won twice in Meydan over the spring, sauntered clear of his rivals at Woodbine to score 28.05 for 18 stables.
