Three horses with a chance in the Unibet Champion Hurdle

Unlike a lot of the races at the Cheltenham Festival, where a number of horses can be put up as a potential winner, the Champion Hurdle has a huge odds-on favourite in Constitution Hill.

The Nicky Henderson star is unbeaten in five starts under rules, with each victory coming by at least 12 lengths, including a stunning 22-length win in the Supreme Novice’s Hurdle at the festival last year.

He had Jonbon back in second that day and is still the only horse to beat him, and his two starts this season couldn’t have been more impressive.

He’s won the Fighting Fifth and Christmas Hurdle on the bridle, beating stablemate and ex Champion Hurdle winner Epatante by 12 and 17 lengths respectively, and is worthy of his place at the top of the ante-post betting.

Everything Constitution Hill does seems so effortless, he could be the horse of the generation and it will be a great sight to see him take his place in the Champion Hurdle on Tuesday.

His biggest challenger will be State Man, last year’s County Hurdle winner who has taken the step up in class in his stride and looks to be the best two-miler in Ireland.

Victories in the Morgiana, Matheson and Irish Champion Hurdle, where he imposed a second career defeat on Honeysuckle, have propelled him up the betting and he could be Constitution Hill’s biggest test.

I don’t see either of those finishing outside of the first two, but the race for third is wide open. Sharjah finished behind State Man in his first two starts this season before losing out by half a length to Fil Dor, but he’s finished second in two Champion Hurdles and that affords him plenty of respect.
