Three horses with a chance in the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase

Since the start of the 2020 Cheltenham Festival, Irish-trained horses have won 69 per cent of all races but only 31 per cent of the handicap chases, so it may be best to side with the British in this one.

Dan Skelton has a couple of interesting runners entered for the 2m handicap chase, including Third Time Lucki, who was good value for his length victory at Sandown last month.

A dual Grade 2 winner over fences as a novice, Third Time Lucki has bounced back to form after wind surgery and on the strength of his novice runs, he could have lots of scope to improve on his current mark.

Unexpected Party is the other runner from the Skelton yard, he’s yet to get off the mark over fences but he ran solid races in novice company either start of being thrown in at the deep end behind Jonbon in the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase.

He ran a race full of promise at Cheltenham in a novice handicap chase, that was around two and half miles, as were his novice starts, and there’s doubts whether he truly stays that trip.

The fast-run two miles will suit him and he could be in the mix, while Thyme White, arrives fresh, which is definitely key to his chances.

Trained by Paul Nicholls, Thyme White has contested two handicaps at festivals previously, the Boodles and the County Hurdle, finishing down the field in both but they came after he had run in February.

Thyme White’s record after a break of more than 100 days reads 2121 and he arrives here off a 116-day break, he’s only 5lb higher than his last winning mark and could still have more to offer.
