Three horses with a chance in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle

The Ballymore has been a great race for favourite backers in recent years with Samcro, Envoi Allen and Sir Gerhard all obliging at odds-on in the last five years, while Bob Olinger justified a short price too at 6-4 in 2021.

The race this year looks far more open, with Hermes Allen likely to lead the way after maintaining his unbeaten record in the Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury.

He was very impressive that day with the way he travelled and won at a canter, never being asked by Harry Cobden, and the runner-up landed a Grade 2 on her next start to frank the form.

Gaelic Warrior holds entries in both the Supreme and the Ballymore and holds claims in either, but with Facile Vega in the festival opener, he’s likely to step up to this intermediate trip which could potentially unlock even more improvement.

He won his maiden hurdle by an unprecedented 86 lengths before storming clear by 15 lengths in the Munster Hurdle and then taking a handicap off a mark of 143.

His connections have seemingly opted against running in a handicap and he could prove right up to the task here.

Stablemate Impaire Et Passe has got to be included in calculations too. He is unbeaten under rules and his maiden hurdle victory was seriously impressive - he travelled strongly throughout and pulled 18 lengths clear.

He backed that up with a win at Grade 2 level, but both of his wins have been achieved on very soft ground, which would be a slight sticking point for me.
