Better news for bookies but FOBT issue is far from settled

Monday's announcement by the Gambling Commission certainly looks like a boost for betting shop operators – but the issue of FOBT stakes is far from decided.

The City seems to think it is good news for bookmakers, with shares in William Hill and Ladbrokes Coral rising sharply.

That the Gambling Commission has recommended a maximum stake of £30 or less for roulette on FOBTs clears the way for government to be able to set a rate higher than the £2 feared by bookmakers and demanded by campaigners.
