Epsom hosts its annual open day on bank holiday Monday with seven trainers opening their doors to the public before an afternoon of racing and family activities at the racecourse.

Racing fans will be able to visit the yards of Jim Boyle, Michael Attwater, Pat Phelan, Roger Ingram, Simon Dow, Mark Pattinson and Adam West from 9.30am, while early risers can see horses exercising on the gallops from 8.30am.

The morning event, which will help raise money for Racing Welfare, is supported by an afternoon of activities at Epsom racecourse, including those for children and a space hopper race between different industry teams.

Dawn Goodfellow, chief executive of Racing Welfare, said: “We hope people will take the opportunity to visit Epsom’s equine residents in their home environment after watching them working on the gallops, meeting the people behind the horses along the way too.

“Epsom is steeped in racing history with a unique feel and we can’t wait to welcome lots of people here on the day.”

A combined ticket to both the open morning and racing costs £20 (£10 for the open morning only) with under 18s free all day. Full details can be found by clicking here.

Robinson hoping for weekend return after Catterick fall

Apprentice Ben Robinson is hoping to be back in the saddle at the weekend after x-rays revealed he had not broken his wrist when unseated on the way to the start at Catterick on Monday.

His mount Champagne Victory, trained by his boss Brian Ellison, bolted going to post for the 7f seller.

Robinson is third in the race for the apprentice title behind Cieren Fallon and Sean Davis, and rode out his claim at the end of last month.

Richard Hale, agent to Robinson, said on Tuesday: “There was no break so it’s good news and Ben is going to Jack Berry House today for some treatment.

“The wrist is sore but there’s no serious injury so he’s hoping to be back by the weekend.

“Ben is having a cracking season and certainly doesn’t want some time on the sidelines as he’s just ridden out his claim. It’s an important time to build some momentum.”
