We need more owners in racing we are constantly being told, but if the authorities are looking for a celebrity endorsement at all then best not ask John Virgo.

The former professional snooker player, and star of Big Break, featured in the Money section of last week's Sunday Times in which famous figures are asked about their spending habits.

Asked what his worst investment had ever been, Virgo replied: "A horse called Jokist. Two of us paid £6,000 for it in 1985. After it won three races someone offered us £40,000.
