Awesome Almanzor surges into awards contention

Almanzor, the exceptional winner of the Irish Champion Stakes, entered the reckoning for two categories of the Cartier Racing Awards following his win in the season's hottest race at Leopardstown last weekend.

The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained colt, winner of his last four races, has 106 points, placing him fifth in the Horse of the Year standings and third in the Three-Year-Old Colt category.

However Aidan O'Brien's brilliant filly Minding (188), third behind Almanzor at the weekend, increased her lead at the head of the Horse of the Year rankings with second-placed Galileo Gold not in action. Hugo Palmer's colt is next set to hit the track at next month's Qipco Champions Day at Ascot.
