Arc owners the Reuben brothers top British racing's rich list

The Reuben brothers have retained their status as the richest people in British racing, according to the new Sunday Times Rich List.

David and Simon Reuben, who own Arena Racing Company, rank at number four overall in the list that was published on Sunday, with assets estimated at £15.096 billion.

The reclusive pair may also be the most influential men in British racing through their ownership of a company that controls 15 racecourses, including Doncaster, Newcastle, Chepstow and Lingfield.

Trevor Hemmings, owner of three Grand National winners, has become a billionaire for the second time. He reached a peak of £1.03 billion in the Rich List 2008 – just before the financial crisis – and is now back to £1bn exactly.

Other big risers include bet365 founder and managing director Denise Coates, whose family has increased its fortune to £5.754bn, and financier Peter Hargreaves, joint-owner of Dunelight and Beacon Lodge, who is now worth £3.164bn.

The threshold for inclusion in the list of 1,000 names has risen to £115m, and snooker promoter Barry Hearn is a newcomer on the minimum amount. He and his wife have owned Mascalls Stud in Essex.

The Rich List is confined to British citizens and foreigners based in Britain, like Kirsten Rausing. It excludes foreigners based abroad, such as the Maktoum and Al Thani families, Khalid Abdullah, John Magnier, JP McManus and Michael O'Leary.

Magnier's Coolmore partners, Michael Tabor (£625m) and Derrick Smith (£561m), are included because they are British citizens. The valuations of both are unchanged since last year.

The Sunday Times also published a list of the richest people in the world. It included US investor Warren Buffett (£62.2bn), who was a racetrack tipster in his student days, and Chanel perfume heirs Alain and Gerard Wertheimer (£19.3bn), owner-breeders of Kotashaan and Goldikova.
