Arc owners Reuben brothers worth an extra £900m

David and Simon Reuben, who own racecourse operator Arena Racing Company, have comfortably retained their status as the wealthiest British racing people on The Sunday Times rich list.

But the Mumbai-born brothers have slipped from first to third overall in the Britain's rich list, compiled annually by the newspaper, even though their combined wealth rose by £900 million to £14 billion.

David, 78, and Simon, 75, arrived in Britain in the 1950s and made their fortune trading aluminium in Russia in the 1990s and in property, airports, hotels, technology and banking since 2000. Arc operates 15 of Britain's racecourses.

Next in the list of the 1,000 wealthiest people in Britain to have a racing connection are the Weston family (£10.5bn) and Kirsten & John Rausing (£9.66bn), followed by Sir James Dyson (£7.8bn), who owns Compton Downs gallops.

Richest bookmakers are Denise, John and Peter Coates, the family who run bet365, the world's largest online gambling business, and whose combined wealth has risen by £1.235bn to £5bn.

They own Stoke City, who play at the bet365 Stadium and in 2015-16 the firm reportedly took £37bn of bets – equivalent to the GDP of Slovenia.

Trevor Hemmings has had a good year financially as his fortune is put at £850m, an increase of £125m on 2016.

Others on the rise include Lord Rothschild (up £85m to £735m) and Lord Vestey and family (up £55m to £727m).

Among numerous other racing personalities featured on the annual list are the Duke of Devonshire (£880m), Lord Lloyd-Webber (£740m), Cheveley Park Stud owners David and Patricia Thompson (£730m), former trainer Peter Harris (£680m), Michael Tabor (£625m), Derrick Smith (£561m), Ed Wray (£250m), Victor Chandler (£230m), Simon Clarke (£180m), Andrew Black (£155m), Judith and Fergus Wilson (£140m), the Duke Of Roxburghe (£125m) and David Dunsdon (£122m).
