Apprentice Amelia Glass given ten-day ban after mistaking Leicester winning post

Apprentice Amelia Glass was hit with a ten-day ban for her ride on Lilbourne Star at Leicester on Thursday after being beaten a neck, having stopped riding for a couple of strides inside the final 100 yards of the 6f handicap.

The stewards report stated: "Glass was suspended for ten days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing on a horse that could have finished first."

The BHA notice added she had "appeared to stop riding for several strides in the final half a furlong, before recommencing riding on the run to the line."

Glass, who has ridden seven career winners, was steadily closing on winning favourite Evening Attire with her head down under a hands and heels ride on the Clive Cox-trained sprinter.

She then stopped riding and looked up for a couple of strides before putting her head down again to push out in the last strides, and was beaten a neck.

Cox, who employs Glass, was not at Leicester but, contacted later, the Lambourn trainer said: "It was human error and Amelia is very upset and said she made a mistake and mistook the winning post.

"She is very hard-working and is a very able and progressive young rider.

"The mistake and ten-day ban is a strong enough punishment and will make sure she never forgets it."

Cox was also not sure Lilbourne Star would have won, adding: "He has not been the most straightforward horse to train and Amelia had given him a beautiful ride until making her mistake."

The Racing Post close-up on Lilbourne Lad read: "Steadied start, held up, headway over 2f out, ridden to chase winner inside final furlong, every chance when eased well inside final furlong, shaken up near finish, ran on."

Glass has been riding for four years, getting off the mark last year after just nine rides in her first two seasons. She ended last year with five winners from 30 rides and has ridden two winners this year.

The 7lb claimer, who could only claim 3lb in the apprentice race, was riding the maiden Lilbourne Star for the first time on the four-year-old's fifth career start.
