Andrea Atzeni handed 11-day whip ban that rules him out of Guineas weekend
Classic-winning jockey Andrea Atzeni will not be adding to his big-race haul in the Qipco 1,000 or 2,000 Guineas this term after he was banned for 11 days for whip offences at Kempton on Friday night.
Atzeni was aboard the Robert Eddery-trained Silver Dollar in a 6f handicap and got the grey home by a nose, but it came at a cost for the rider.
The BHA stewards on duty noted the 31-year-old, whose winner returned as the 5-2 favourite, used "his whip above the permitted level, down the shoulder in the forehand, and without time to respond, from one and a half furlongs out" and suspended him for 11 days.
Atzeni, who won the St Leger on Kingston Hill in 2014 and on Simple Verse 12 months later, did not want to comment when contacted by the Racing Post and was keen to digest the incident fully before considering an appeal.
As it stands, he will be out of action from April 22 until May 2, which would mean he misses the Newmarket Classics.
He might be required in the 2,000 Guineas on April 30 as leading owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, who retains the Italian, has Triple Time and Razzle Dazzle engaged.
A Listed winner under Atzeni when last seen at Haydock in September, Triple Time is a 25-1 chance for the mile event, while Razzle Dazzle, who won a Newmarket novice for the jockey last summer, can be backed at 66-1.
