The British racing industry and bookmakers now know who new prime minister Liz Truss has appointed to her cabinet but that is probably as far as the certainty goes.

Truss is regarded as having a libertarian, light-touch approach to government but whether that will be the case for gambling reform has yet to be established.

The appointment of Michelle Donelan as culture secretary, with responsibility for publishing the long-delayed gambling review white paper, might be regarded as a worrying portent by bookmakers given her previous support for gambling reform, although she has not been vocal on the subject in recent years.
