Aidan O'Brien weighs up Classic plans for Guineas winners Love and Peaceful
The destination of 1,000 Guineas winner Love is likely to have a bearing on plans for her stablemate Peaceful, who landed the Irish 1,000, with Aidan O'Brien on Thursday weighing up his options for the Investec Oaks at Epsom and its French equivalent, the Prix de Diane.
O'Brien had left Peaceful in Saturday's Coronation Stakes until the 72-hour declaration stage but, with the race coming just seven days after her Curragh heroics and the trainer of the opinion she will be better over further, the decision has been made to wait for another Classic.
"We've had it in our mind that Peaceful could stay further, so she could be trained for the Oaks," said O'Brien after Battleground's victory in the Chesham Stakes. "She could also go to France if Love goes to Epsom."
O'Brien's Derby hand does not look as strong as usual, with Hampton Court Stakes winner Russian Emperor shortest in the betting at a best-priced 11-1.
The trainer, who has won the premier Classic a record-equalling seven times, added: "Russian Emperor produced a big run and looks like he might get a bit further and he has the option of all three Derbys."
O'Brien did not rule out King Edward VII Stakes odds-on favourite Mogul, who ran a disappointing fourth on day one of Royal Ascot.
He said: "It'll be interesting to see what Mogul does between now and the Derby, he could come forward quite a lot. We had to take the chance he'd get tired as we're trying to do in one run what we'd normally do in two runs. He could improve a lot for it and come into the reckoning."
Sir Dragonet was the beaten favourite in last year's Derby, finishing fifth, and met with defeat again in the Listed Wolferton Stakes on Thursday, finishing two and a quarter lengths behind Mountain Angel.
"Sir Dragonet ran a great race and came home very well, as did Monarch Of Egypt [second in the Jersey Stakes]. Both just met horses who handled the ground very well."
O'Brien also warned fans to keep faith with Japan, who disappointed when sent off 6-4 favourite for the Prince of Wales's Stakes on Wednesday.
"They went a good, strong gallop in Japan's race and it's a long season and we were conscious of that," he added. "He was slowly away and the real end-to-end gallop didn't let him get into it, but we expect him to come forward plenty for that."
