Aidan Coleman rides 1,000th winner and promptly sets sight on doubling it

Aidan Coleman reached a landmark 1,000 winners after partnering Western Miller to an all-the-way victory at Stratford on Saturday evening.

Coleman is the eighth jump jockey currently riding to reach four figures, just under five months after Brian Hughes reached the milestone.

The Irishman said: "It’s taken 13 years to get there but it’s a huge personal achievement and a milestone for myself anyway.

"I am 30 years old now and it has taken me this long to get there but hopefully before I retire I might get to the 2,000."

Coleman had sat tenth in the current list until the retirement this spring of Ruby Walsh and Noel Fehily.

Their retirement leaves Coleman behind only Richard Johnson, Barry Geraghty, Davy Russell, Tom Scudamore, Paddy Brennan, Graham Lee and Hughes.

Coleman added: "It’s fantastic to do it on a horse trained by Charlle Longsdon as he has been a huge supporter of mine down the years along with Venetia Williams, John Ferguson, for a short while anyway, and more recently Jonjo O’Neill and Olly Murphy.”

The landmark comes the season after Coleman celebrated his first Grade 1 wins care of the Emma Lavelle-trained Paisley Park, first in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot before an imperious win in the Stayers' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Coleman said: "Somehow it would not have been right in getting the 1,000 winners without a Grade 1 in there – it’s taken me this long to do it but I really appreciate it."

The 1,000th winner came in the 2m3½f handicap chase on Western Miller after which Coleman added: "He is a very likeable horse who really likes it around this course as the fences somehow seem to come up at the right time and he jumps so well, which is a real asset around a track where getting things right is vital.”
