There was something about the way Cheryl McClean skipped towards the stage to accept her Newcomer Award and then proceeded to speak with the giddiness of a girl who could never contemplate doing anything else in life that made you feel positive about the future of horseracing and breeding in Ireland.

The Irish Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards is the one night of the year when you feel really good about the game. There are no egos or divas to be found anywhere. It is not about what you can get out of the game, it is about what everyone has put in. It could not be anymore real.

The 2019 awards ceremony was held in the Killashee Hotel outside Naas on Tuesday night and the Lockewood Suite burst with pride, and laughter, as McClean told everyone that her boss, Willie McCreery, has his "in and out days". She just said what she thought and did not think any more about it. It was gloriously refreshing to hear such honesty.
