'A masterful performance' - Christian Williams heads this week's winners

The Racing Post's awards will honour the best (and sometimes worst) performances and raise talking points from the last seven days of racing. This week's winners are . . .

Trainer of the week

Christian Williams

What a 2022 this man is having. After landing the Coral Trophy and Eider Chase on the same day in February, Williams enjoyed another magical afternoon on Saturday when he trained the one-two in the Scottish Grand National in Win My Wings and Kitty's Light.

It was a masterful training performance to have both absolutely spot-on for the big occasion and there can't be many better at handling staying chasers.

He has achieved this without the help of mega bucks, too, with the pair having been bought for a combined fee of less than £15,000.

'That was extraordinary' - dream Scottish National 1-2 for Christian Williams

Ante-post mover of the week

Homeless Songs

It's that time of year when plenty of smart Flat horses are starting to emerge, bidding to cement their claims for the Classics in May and June.

Stone Age and Piz Badile surfaced as potential Derby dark horses, but perhaps the one to have done the most for their profile was the Dermot Weld-trained Homeless Songs, who was stationed to the rear of midfield in Leopardstown's 1,000 Guineas Trial before making smooth progress and showing a pleasing turn of foot to see off Agartha.

She is now as short as 10-1 for the 1,000 Guineas, having been a general 33-1.

'Newmarket is a strong possibility' - Homeless Songs satisfies Weld's hopes

Ride of the week

Nico de Boinville on Dusart

There was plenty against the Nicky Henderson-trained Dusart given the short turnaround from his Cheltenham appearance and, after De Boinville went for home early, it appeared his race was run when headed by the charging Sounds Russian on the run-in.

It looked like Callum Bewley had timed his run perfectly on Sounds Russian but De Boinville was having none of it and galvanised Dusart to fight back and nab victory on the line, costing some Betfair Exchange punters dearly on the 1.01-matched runner-up and providing a handy form boost for his Brown Advisory conquerors L'Homme Presse and Ahoy Senor in the process.

Debut of the week

Wexford Native

Jim Bolger plundered the 2,000 Guineas last year with Poetic Flare – could he have another Classic contender on his hands in the impressive Wexford Native?

The Teofilo colt overcame the widest draw of all in stall 21 to defeat the more experienced Ballydoyle favourite Sun King, hinting there should be plenty more to come. He has entries in the 2,000 Guineas, Irish 2,000 Guineas and Irish Derby.

Feel-good winner of the week

Lalor

A lot has changed in the 1,231 days since Lalor had last entered the winner's enclosure.

He seemingly had the world at his feet when winning the Arkle Trial at Cheltenham in November 2018, following up his Grade 1 Aintree win that April, but the wheels swiftly fell off and complications arising from an irregular heartbeat left him with an uncertain future on the track.

Now aged ten, Lalor had shown sparks of a revival in the new surroundings of Paul Nicholls' Ditcheat yard and he gained a deserved success when holding off Al Dancer in a thrilling finish at Newbury under Harry Cobden. Patience had paid off and it was a fitting reward for his owner David Staddon.
