£1.2m Melbourne Cup hope set for return to Goodwood next Saturday

There was significant rain for the first time in two months across much of East Anglia this week but not in Newmarket, which meant the all-weather surfaces kept the show on the road on Saturday.

George Boughey made use of the Cambridge Road Polytrack for Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal, who was bought for £1.2 million by his new connections with the long-term aim of running in the Melbourne Cup this autumn.

He acquitted himself well on his first start out of Saffron House Stables when third in the Group 3 Gordon Stakes at Goodwood, just a neck shy of Wednesday's Great Voltigeur winner Deauville Legend. The St Leger hopeful will return to the Sussex venue for the Group 3 March Stakes next Saturday.
