Themaxwecan has been hinting towards a big staying handicap win since he won at Ascot during last year's King George meeting. That it has not worked out yet is down to circumstance as much as anything else.

He got no run in testing ground in the Cesarewitch, having won at Goodwood the time before, and after a sharpener at Haydock, he came from an unpromising position to finish fourth at Royal Ascot.

His turn looks to be coming and there is every reason to think it might be here. He has a longer straight, a slightly less competitive field in opposition and his trainer Mark Johnston won this race last year.

That last point might be more significant than meets the eye. This valuable race has been fairly newly minted and being the first onto a new angle is typical of Johnston. He has four runners this year and ensured Ryan Moore's services for Themaxwecan at an early stage. Add that to his generally promising profile and it is not hard to imagine the race has been on his radar since racing resumed.
