Tolstoy the author of Frankel's first broodmare sire success

Sir Robert Ogden's colt scored in good style at Yarmouth

Frankel can already be considered a successful grandparent, with the victory by Tolstoy at Yarmouth on Wednesday believed to be the superstar's first as a broodmare sire.

Sir Robert Ogden's juvenile is out of War And Peace, the name of Tolstoy's famously difficult to read masterpiece, who was born among Frankel's second crop in 2015 but never made it to the track.

The colt has Juddmonte breeding across the board, with War And Peace's dam being the Dansili mare Emulous, an excellent performer for Dermot Weld who won the 2011 Matron Stakes.

She was withdrawn by Juddmonte from the 2017 Tattersalls December Mare Sale and appears to have been bought by Ogden privately.

Tolstoy was also sired by Frankel's fellow Banstead Manor resident Kingman, who had also supplied War And Peace's winning half-sister Desirous.

Sent off at 7-1 for the John and Thady Gosden yard in the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes, Tolstoy was always close to the pace and pulled out just enough after a couple of reminders by Martin Harley to beat I'm A Gambler and another Kingman, King Of Gold, by half a length.
