Second Classic-winning son for Cabaret through St Mark's Basilica

Cabaret elevated herself to the truly elite class of broodmares as she produced her second Classic winner through Poule d'Essai des Poulains winner St Mark's Basilica.

The colt's Australian breeder Bob Scarborough was required to be patient after his costly purchase of the Group 3-winning Galileo mare, who produced little of note from her first few progeny until the Vertem Futurity and 2019 2,000 Guineas winner Magna Grecia emerged on the scene.

His half-brother St Mark's Basilica was already a Group 1 star himself from last season's Dewhurst and was continuing his sire Siyouni's impressive run in the French Classics.

The Haras de Bonneval resident has delivered six top-level winners and five of them have now struck in domestic blue riband events, with Ervedya and Dream And Do both taking the fillies' equivalent on this card, Sottsass the French Derby and Laurens the Oaks.

Scarborough, who sold St Mark's Basilica to Coolmore for 1,300,000gns through Norelands Stud as a yearling, could not find a buyer for his full-brother Paris Lights last October and said earlier in the year he would be sending him to Jessica Harrington. Cabaret bore him a Kingman colt at the end of January.

A rather less familiar name in such exalted surroundings is The Wow Signal, who suffered from fertility issues in only a couple of seasons at Haras de Bouquetot before his death in early 2018.

The 2014 Prix Morny and Coventry Stakes winner left only a handful of offspring in Australia and 15 formally registered foals in France, one of which happened to be the surprise Pouliches victress Coeursamba.

Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget had taken a chance on the filly for just €40,000 at Arqana's V2 Yearling Sale and, after winning a maiden and getting her Group 3-placed last year, she went through the ring for €400,000 at the Arc Sale and is now owned by Abdullah bin Fahad Al Attiyah.

Bred by members of the Mestrallet family and a half-sister to Listed-placed Lady Sidney, Coeursamba is a first northern hemisphere Group winner for her sire, whose half-brother Unicorn Lion coincidentally won a race in Niigata, Japan, a few hours earlier.

Sea The Stars kicked the weekend off in striking fashion by siring three consecutive winners at Newmarket on Friday concluding with Enable's half-brother Derab, and was also responsible for Saturday's effortless Aston Park scorer Al Aasy.

The Gilltown linchpin, whose stallion son Sea The Moon was responsible for progressive Prix Maurice Zilber winner Sagamiyra, wrapped things up with a potential Prix de Diane contender in Burgarita, who took her career record to two from two with an efficient victory in the Listed Prix de la Seine.

A half-sister to Prix Allez France winner African Sky, Andre Fabre's filly is a graduate of Tally-Ho Stud's breeze-up programme.
