BIG-RACE BANKER

U S Navy Flag(2.15 Newmarket)

Aidan O'Brien last won the feature July Cup in 2010 with Starspangledbanner but he looks likely to end the drought – if you can call it that – with U S Navy Flag. Now I am prone to putting my money on this horse and watching him lose, but today this is all going to change as the drop in trip from a mile will bring out the best in the son of War Front. He clearly hasn't stayed the mile the last couple of times he's run, including when fading badly at Royal Ascot, and his form over this trip is exceptional. He has a nice high draw and hopefully Ryan Moore will be celebrating post-race.

GOOD THING

Elwazir(3.05 Ascot)

Elwazir, my favourite horse since I saw him at Meon Valley Stud as a yearling, looks a sure thing to follow up his Sandown novice victory under Frankie Dettori. The extremely well-bred son of Frankel showed plenty of promise when recording form figures of 24 in a couple of runs at Newmarket last season and proved he had improved for a winter break when hacking up in what was a really good contest at the Esher venue. After breaking well, he travelled ominously behind the pace and cleared away from his useful field, winning by just under three lengths. That was his first crack at 1m2f, the form has been boosted and there's plenty more improvement to come.

EYECATCHER

(1.20 Ascot)

The fact this mile contest is around a bend puts me off Century Dream and Lord Glitters – both of which are better on straight courses – although I do think the latter is the best horse in the race. However, with Zhui Feng likely to take them along, the race could be set up for Beat The Bank, who hasn't shown his best form since winning the Group 2 Joel Stakes last season but looked like getting back to himself when a staying-on sixth at the royal meeting last time out. Beaten just under two lengths, he was never in the position to challenge the leaders but stuck on gamely despite pulling hard early and can overturn the form with a few of his rivals.

DARK HORSE

Masham Star(1.40 Newmarket)

The Bunbury Cup is notoriously tough race but it looks wise to look at the high-drawn runners and Masham Star, who has a nice racing weight of 8st 12lb catches my eye as one likely to go close at a price. Mark Johnston's runner is as fit as a flea, has good form at the course and is fairly treated on his best efforts last season. He's come back to form this year the last twice and considering he's a miler, he'll be plugging on strongly at the line to at least grab a place.
