Richard Birch shares his Placepot perm for Chepstow's afternoon meeting

Credit: Alan Crowhurst

A juggling act that would grace Barnum’s Circus is required for leg one (1.05) of the Chepstow Placepot, arguably the most competitive race on the card.

The safest best is Tabaahy, who continues to perform at the very top of his game, and prolific winner Bal Mal, probably still capable off a career-high mark of 73.

Rely on Shobiz to confirm the rich promise of his debut Haydock second to Cobh in leg two (1.40), while Sun Festival is another with standout claims in the third leg (2.15).

Leg four (2.45) is less straightforward but Rae Guest’s stable has been in excellent form this summer, and it could pay to include his handicap debutante City Escape.

She was beaten just over a length when fourth to Oksana Astankova at Lingfield last month, and possesses plenty of scope for improvement off 64.

Recent Bath winner Knight’s Gate should also be highly competitive after being raised 4lb for that success.

The unbeaten Eternal Blush and smooth Newmarket scorer Gert Lush merit inclusion in leg five (3.15), while Quarry Beach appeals in the concluding leg (3.45).
