Paul Kealy provides his Tote Placepot perm at York

There are only four runners in the opening leg of the York Placepot (12.15), but it still makes more appeal than Newbury, which starts with three big-field juvenile races with little form to go on.

is the standout of the two that have run, while is the clear pick of the two who haven’t, but we won’t be kicking many out of the pool.

It gets trickier afterwards, but looks solid in leg two (12.45) as he keeps running right up to form, while Clareyblueran his best race at this track on fast ground last season and his trainer has a good strike-rate (29 per cent) with horses in first-time blinkers.

Tasaamuh is the obvious one in leg three (1.20), but she’s dirt bred, and I’d take her with , who shaped well after missing the kick on his debut, and , who took a big step forwards last time and can progress again.

Leg four is tight enough on the betting front, but I reckon is the one to beat as Communique is not certain to stay.

If you ignore his soft-ground flop in the Gold Cup over 2m4f, he has some really solid staying form.

The John Smith’s Cup (2.30) is a hard race to get through, but at least there are four places. My two against the field are last year’s winner Pivoineand , but is worth adding too at a price.

You can ignore his Royal Ascot run as that’s the second time he performed poorly on easy ground there, and he has some good form otherwise.

I’d be worried about a couple coming out of the last because of fast ground, so I’ll go with two again. is improving and clearly likes York, while could be one whose chance is underestimated in the pool.
