Tom Collins analyses the credentials of four favourites in the US on Saturday

Cardiac Kid
5.45 Gulfstream Park
SP forecast 2-1

A $230,000 purchase as a juvenile, Cardiac Kid is now winless in six career outings despite showing promise in maiden special weight company at Saratoga and Churchill Downs early on. He was dropped into a maiden claimer last time and was just chinned on the line after making most of the running from a wide draw.

Conclusion Drawn better today and can get off the mark.

Witch Hunter
7.15 Gulfstream Park
SP forecast 6-5

Cheap two-year-old but proved she has ability in this grade the last three starts, recording form figures of 232. Appears to need every yard of this mile trip and was beaten at an extremely skinny 1-5 last time. Not one for maximum trust but probably bumped into one that day. Drawn gate ten of ten.

Conclusion Should be winning on debut for Victor Barboza but not a betting prospect.

Projected
7.46 Gulfstream Park
SP forecast 9-5

Four-time winner in France before being shipped to the US, where he has a record of just three wins from 23 starts. Returned to something like his best when winning a mile turf claimer at Tampa Bay Downs last time but has a record of 0-5 at Gulfstream Park and steps back up in grade.

Conclusion Take him on at this venue.

Maxfield
10.44 Churchill Downs
SP forecast 4-5

Green on debut at this track in September but flew home to land the spoils in the style of a good horse. Backed up that theory by bolting up in the Grade 1 Claiborne Futurity Stakes at Keeneland a month later, beating subsequent Florida Derby fourth Gouverneur Morris by five and a half lengths. The apple of rider Jose Ortiz's eye.

Conclusion Extremely talented colt who has a chance in the Kentucky Derby later in the year. Works have been good and he can keep his unbeaten streak.
