Newmarket Placepot tips: Graeme Rodway with his perm for Thursday's card

The Placepot at Newmarket kicks off with a tricky mile maiden (1.15) in which a fearsome standard isn’t set. Maybe the newcomers Garden Route and A Dublin Lad can get us through.

Charlie Appleby usually dominates the big meetings at Newmarket and it’s not worth looking beyond his runners in the mile nursery (1.50). Put both Bold Act and One Nation in the perm.

The 6f fillies’ handicap (2.25) looks a good opportunity for Azure Blue to get back to winning ways and she rates banker material provided all eight runners make it to the start.

The winner will be needed in the feature Tattersalls Stakes (3.00) and it’s a tough race to call. Nostrum was impressive at Sandown and goes in along with Godolphin colt Victory Dance.

Just two places will be available in the following 2m Listed race (3.35). Thunderous looks sure to run well after a good effort at York last time, but Ranch Hand is a solid alternative.

The 1m4f handicap (4.10) is the last leg and Amtiyaz is one of my best bets of the day. However, he can take a pull and it’s worth having an insurance policy by including Dhahabi.
