Day ten preview
First-time men's Grand Slam champions are not crowned very often - there have been just five since the beginning of 2010 - but they tend to come in New York and that will be the case this year after Rafael Nadal and Marin Cilic were both knocked out on Monday.
Prime contenders Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz square up in the Flushing Meadows men's quarter-finals on Wednesday while world number one Iga Swiatek is in action in the women's draw.
Jannik Sinner v Carlos Alcaraz
The most anticipated match on Wednesday's schedule comes in the form of a battle between the ATP World Tour's two most promising talents.
After Nadal's loss to Frances Tiafoe, Alcaraz has the opportunity to become the youngest men's player to top the world rankings if he wins the US Open.
That's easier said than done because, in Sinner, he faces a rival who has got the better of him in each of their last two meetings
Both players were pushed to five sets in their previous matches and it would be no surprise if this was to go the distance too.
Andrey Rublev v Frances Tiafoe
Tiafoe was electric in taking down Nadal but it was clear that the 22-time Grand Slam champion was not close to the peak of his powers throughout his four US Open matches.
Take nothing away from Tiafoe, who still had to win, but Andrey Rublev is likely to provide him with a tougher test after the Russian dismissed Cameron Norrie 6-4 6-4 6-4 in the last 16.
Rublev has fallen short five times before in Slam quarter-finals and was beaten by Big Foe in the 2021 US Open, but he avenged that loss in Indian Wells in March and should be confident.
Iga Swiatek v Jessica Pegula
Swiatek cut a forlorn figure in the early stages of her last-16 match against Jule Niemeier, and while the Pole rallied well to win from a set and a break down, she will have to be sharp from the get-go against Jessica Pegula.
The WTA number one has not looked at her imperious best in recent tournaments. She is yet to meet a fellow top-50 player in New York but her next opponent is eighth in the world and must not be taken lightly.
Pegula eased past Petra Kvitova in the last-16 and will get plenty of crowd support as a New York state native. She can stun Swiatek.
Karolina Pliskova v Aryna Sabalenka
Two WTA heavy hitters go toe-to-toe for a place in the semi-finals with Aryna Sabalenka the narrow favourite to return to the last four for a second consecutive year.
Pliskova has come through a tough section to reach this stage while Sabalenka has also had to battle, and there's not much between them in what is likely to be a long, bruising baseline contest.
