I've little doubt the Charlie-Johnston-trained Benacre, who lines up in mile handicap (2.55) for older horses, is also well handicapped.

You sense Benacre's connections would have hoped he was plying his trade at a higher level by now. He was sent off favourite for the German 2,000 Guineas last May, and for good reason, given he had kept Sprint Cup runner-up Shouldvebeenaring honest a few weeks earlier in a Listed race over 7f on the Rowley Mile.

He was a little in and out after that, but ran right up to his best form on his reappearance following a gelding operation at Wolverhampton, setting a strong pace before finishing a length third behind a couple of held-up runners. That was a decent performance. Off an unchanged mark of 92 he isn't going to be far away at a nice price if building on that, while the ability to stay further is no bad thing on this course, particularly given the rain the track took on Monday.
