EYECATCHER

Boy In The Bar (1.50 Goodwood)

Very consistent handicapper for big-race dual-purpose trainer Ian Williams, who definitely knows how to produce one to win a handicap like this. The son of Dutch Art proved he handles the track well when winning a course-and-distance event here last may on quick ground off a mark of 86, and now makes plenty of appeal racing off a 5lb lower rating. He won twice last autumn but has been off the boil this summer so far, although he showed plenty of encouragement at Epsom and Doncaster in June. Soft ground went against him last time but, with a nice draw and Ryan Moore booked, he should go close to winning.

DARK HORSE

Soldier In Action(2.25 Goodwood)

Mark Johnston is the trainer to follow in this staying contest and he fields more than a third of the runners, with five of the 14 entries. Silvestre de Sousa, who has won the race for the last two years, could be on the right horse again as he partners Soldier In Action, who is now very well-handicapped off a mark of 97. The five-year-old, who has won two races from three starts at the track, won this race off 9lb higher last year and has struggled over a variety of trips since. The handicapper has eventually dropped him down the weights and this test is exactly what the doctor ordered.

EACH-WAY PLAY

(3.40 Goodwood)

A Group horse in a handicap. That's the angle I'm going off here in what is one of the hardest races to find the winner in year-on year. Gifted Master has largely been campaigned in Group company since his novice days – running extremely creditably on more than one occasion, including winning twice – but had his first run in this sphere at Newmarket in May off a mark of 109 and made every single yard under a welter burden of 9st 10lb. He's had two starts at a higher level since but returns to handicaps off topweight here. Jason Watson takes off a very handy 5lb, he's got a lovely draw against the near-side rail and looks a lovely each-way bet at a big price.
