Cheltenham form makes Williams runner interesting in BetVictor Gold Cup

Le Patriote has decent chance of following up his Ascot success
Le Patriote: pleasing return at ChepstowCredit: Mark Cranham

Deyrann De Carjac
Trainer: Alan King

One to note when switched to handicaps. With an official rating of 126, this hurdler set the standard in this 2m novice contest and he made hot favourite Pym work hard for the win, with the two pulling well clear. Deyrann De Carjac travelled strongly through the race and looks the type to be most effective produced late off a brisk pace.

Le Patriote
Richard Newland

8th, Chepstow, October 13
This six-year-old won a valuable handicap hurdle over this trip of 2m3½f at Ascot in February and, having pulled up at Sandown the following month – his only start in the intervening period – there was a lot to like about this return. He made striking headway approaching three out but a mistake at that hurdle caused him to lose valuable momentum. He then wasn’t fluent at the last and, had his jumping been better, you have to think he might have finished in the frame. This was just his fifth start for a stable who place their horses exceptionally well.

This was the third time in as many seasons the Ultima Handicap Chase hero has been beaten at Chepstow on his seasonal debut. He weakened quickly in the home straight, when presumably fitness was an issue, and was beaten 32 lengths. But before tiring he travelled well and jumped economically. With Cheltenham form figures of 231643241 next month’s BetVictor Gold Cup is a possible target.
