Mutawaary

The South African season runs from the beginning of August to the end of July and Greyville, where the action takes place today, stages the prestigious Grade 1 Durban July towards the end of the season on its tight right-handed turf course.

The relatively new Polytrack course is in use today, which is a 1m2f (2000m) course inside the 1m6f (2800m) triangular turf track. As you would expect, a low draw can prove beneficial to a horse with the tactical speed to exploit it.

We are two hours behind Durban in the UK and their opening 6f juvenile contest will go off at 10.50 UK time. Six of the eight runners are newcomers, so there is little form to go on, although it is notable that multiple champion jockey Anton Marcus – who has ridden 73 winners from 269 rides this season at a 26 per cent strike-rate – is riding the well-drawn Tread Swiftly for Brett Crawford, who is currently flying high in third in the trainers' championship.

Two more 6f maidens follow before the 1m1f Graduation Plate at 12.35, a race for maidens, plus one and two-time winners. Dean Kannemeyer saddles Joseph Jagger, who has won twice and placed five times in his nine starts. Warren Kennedy is well clear in the jockeys' championship, with 182 wins from 991 rides, and he rides the other two-time winner, Railtrip. He has raced 20 times and is that bit more exposed, Joseph Jagger is marginally preferred.

The best handicap on the card is the fifth race (1.10) which is for horses officially rated up to 87. Kennedy's mount Mutawaary is the suggestion here. Kennedy will hopefully be able to negotiate a run from off the pace out of stall eight and the Australian-bred five-year-old is capable of enhancing his record of four wins and 16 placings from 30 starts for Dennis Bosch.
