A return to quicker ground can see Rufus King conquer rivals

Rufus King
Trainer: Mark Johnston

6th, Chester, September 30
This two-year-old is a hardy individual with this his ninth race. A noticeable dip in form has coincided with him encountering soft ground so given he probably found the testing conditions underfoot in this 6f nursery not to his liking, this was a better effort than the bare form. After getting away slowly from a wide draw he was then rushed up to the front and raced freely in first-time blinkers. He was a length clear two out but surrendered the lead approaching the final furlong and looked tired in the closing stages. Back on a faster surface he will be a different proposition.

Brorocco
Andrew Balding

5th, Newmarket, September 30
The four-year-old has now produced three big runs on the bounce in ultra-competitive handicaps. He fared best of the horses towards the top of the betting in the Cambridgeshire and travelled strongly for much of the 1m1f contest. This was the slowest ground (good to soft) he had encountered this season, and with his four career wins coming on good or faster going, returning to decent ground could result in an improved performance.

Makzeem
Roger Charlton

Won, Newmarket, September 30
Makzeem improved his best RPR by 8lb with this commanding display, finishing strongly from off the pace under a confident Ryan Moore ride. Connections will want to strike while the iron is hot and he runs on Saturday in the totescoop6 Challenge Cup at Ascot (3.35).
