Not many of the ten-runner field for the SBK Handicap Hurdle (2.35) at Doncaster arrive in much form but one that ran with some credit last time out was Blue Ridge Hill.

He was beaten just under eight lengths at Sandown last month, staying on quite nicely in the closing stages and shaping like a step up to this sort of trip could be a source of improvement.

With a fair amount of rain in the forecast before racing, the expected testing conditions will suit the selection who was runner-up on similar ground in two Carlisle bumpers last season.

The son of Blue Bresil ran to a consistent level through that campaign – finishing in the first three on all four starts – and while he was disappointing in his first two runs this term, it was a definite step back in the right direction at Sandown. A 3lb drop for that promising handicap debut looks on the lenient side and he’s less exposed than the rest of the field having just his fifth start over obstacles.

The following race on the card, a three-mile handicap chase (3.05), doesn’t look deep on quality and one that can take advantage is Event Of Sivola, who seems to be really thriving on his racing in recent times.

The ten-year-old gained a sixth chase win at Catterick last month, bolting up by seventeen lengths and he could be hard to catch again here with a few things in his favour including ground conditions.

With little pace in the contest on paper, Event Of Sivola may be able to dictate his own fractions and it can be argued that a 7lb rise is lenient for his latest win given his domination in the closing stages. Jamie Hamilton, on board for four of his wins, retains the ride and his mount has obvious claims in a weak contest.

The veteran, Didero Vallis, isn’t easy to win with these days but he’s down to a mark he can surely win off and he’s been found a good opportunity in Ludlow’s feature (3.30), a three-mile amateur jockeys' handicap chase.

The selection showed very little in the Welsh National on his penultimate start, but he shaped like a return to form was imminent when dropped in class at Catterick since and he has run well at this venue before too.

His chance here is boosted with the booking of Lucy Turner, one of the more talented amateur jockeys on the circuit, and her mount has been placed off much higher marks than this in the not-too-distant past.

This looks a weak race for a Class 3 and if he does manage to build on his Catterick effort, he’s going to be hard to beat from a joint career-low mark.

David Simcock has been banging in the winners on the all-weather over the last few weeks and Kingston Joy looks capable of enhancing the trainer’s strike-rate in the penultimate race on Kempton’s card.

It was a welcome return to form for the mare when she finished runner-up at this venue over 1m3f earlier this month, and she shaped like she would relish this extra furlong.

That effort is worth upgrading having conceded first run to the winner before circling the whole field to make her challenge in the home straight. While a decent gallop is essential for this hold-up performer, the likes of Largo Bay, Drill To Dream and Elterwater should all ensure the race is run at an honest pace.

Jamie Spencer, on board for the mare’s only previous win, returns in the saddle and has an impressive 19 per cent strike-rate when riding for Simcock. His patient style is well suited to Kempton’s outer track, where he can wait for the cutaway before hitting the button.

This will be the first time he’s ridden the mare since the pair were narrowly denied from 4lb higher over this distance at Wolverhampton last year and they can go one better here.
