This year's Bloodstock South Africa National Yearling Sale ended on a high on Friday with brisk trading and a new top lot featuring in the last of two sessions.

The sale's aggregate of R102,470,000 (£5,175,00/€5,973,000) was an 18 per cent increase from the 2020 figure of R87,065,000. While the average dropped to R276,946 from R295,136 a year ago, the median rose from R160,000 to R200,000.

With recent National Sale graduates headed by recent World Sports Betting Triple Crown winner Malmoos as well as the likes of Captain's Ransom and Jet Dark, there was some quiet optimism in evidence at Germiston.

Varsfontein Stud's Gimmethegreenlight provided the sales-topping grey lot 351, out of multiple Grade 1 winner All Is Secret, who was knocked down to Form Bloodstock's Jehan Malherbe for R2.8 million (£141,000/€163,000).

A half-brother to Listed Lady's Bracelet winner Sovereign Secret, and sporting graded stakes winners as his first two dams, the sales topping colt was consigned to the sale by Klawervlei Stud.

Gimmethegreenlight ended up as the sale's leading sire, while Varsfontein was top vendor. Nine yearlings passed the seven-figure mark on the final day.
