How the William Hill St Leger could have used a bit of help from the Hearn family to create some razzmatazz a few years ago as the world’s oldest Classic shuffled towards relative obscurity.
Results such as that of 2017, when Capri led home a string of blockbusting achievers in Crystal Ocean, Stradivarius, Rekindling and Coronet, has seen the race renew its reputation somewhat, and the present hot favourite Logician could easily place himself in the same bracket in the future.
While Barry Hearn continues to bring darts, snooker and even fishing to the masses through his Matchroom organisation and son Eddie prepares for Anthony Joshua’s latest title showdown against Andy Ruiz Jr in December, the Essex sporting family could also be represented in the Leger itself, albeit from the other side of the fence.
