Smart Shirocco son Arrigo joins French stallion ranks
Ten-year-old is a half-brother to German Derby hero Adlerflug
Arrigo, a Shirocco half-brother to Deutsches Derby winner and Group 1 sire Adlerflug, is moving to Haras du Mazet in central France for 2019.
The ten-year-old, owned by Qatari Abdul Malik, has been covering mares at Gestut Graditz in his native Germany since 2016.
He covered around 20 mares in each of his first two seasons at stud.
Originally trained by Jens Hirschberger for owner-breeder Gestut Schlenderhan, Arrigo won the Group 2 Oppenheim-Union Rennen and finished second in the Group 1 Gren Premio Jockey Club Italiano at three.
He was later sold to Qatari interests, for whom his career was overseen by Ibrahim Al Malki. He finished third in the Qatar Derby and HH The Emir Trophy in the middle east.
Arrigo's principal appeal lies in his pedigree. His dual-purpose sire Shirocco has top-flight winners to his name both on the Flat – Brown Panther and Windstoss – and over jumps, of which the great hurdling mare Annie Power is the best.
Furthermore, Arrigo is a half-brother to Adlerflug and hails from the family of Arc heroine and phenomenal broodmare Urban Sea, dam of sire aces Galileo and Sea The Stars, and her half-brother King's Best, a Classic winner himself and sire of Classic winners too.
