Power-packed chance for Nanallac Stud at Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale

County Kildare operation offers a Belardo half-brother to promising sprinter

Nanallac Stud, Gerry Callanan's long-lived operation near Monasterevin in County Kildare, is often known as a consignor of foals but there will be no time like the present for one of its representatives in next week's Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale.

The registering of a Belardo colt (lot 390) in the catalogue chimes nicely after the victory of his half-brother Power Under Me in the Listed Testimonial Stakes at the Curragh.

The three-year-old, offered in partnership by breeder Barbel Reiss, made €28,000 at the November Foal Sale and has placed in three other Group sprints for Ger Lyons and owner Vincent Gaul. His latest victory was the one which saw Colin Keane break Joseph O'Brien's Irish Flat championship record of 126 winners in a season.

"It's a serious update to have," said Callanan. "He's a nice little horse, a little bit backward but a very racy type of horse, a great goer with a good attitude.

"Power Under Me was much the same, he was a nice little foal but a bit backward, he didn't run until the backend of the year as a two-year-old. There'll be a good bit of interest in him I'd say alright, with the help of god!"

Nanallac also offers a Gleneagles colt (460) whose granddam is a half-sister to the mighty Finsceal Beo.

"He's a very nice bay horse from a good family, he's doing everything right," said Callanan.

The stud could have something else very exciting to look forward to next week, with alumni member Hierarchy shooting for gold in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Led away unsold from last year's Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale at £9,000, he was tried as a breeze-up prospect and Ian McCarthy prepared him for a 105,000gns sale to David Redvers on behalf of David Howden and Qatar Racing. Hugo Palmer's charge has won twice and placed in both the Sirenia and Mill Reef Stakes.

"We bought him as a foal, couldn't sell him as a yearling and had him home here, he did extremely well and the sire, Mehmas, is a great sire, he's unbelievable," explained Callanan. "But that's just the way some of these horses go, you never know where the good one is.

"Hierarchy is hopefully running in the Breeders' Cup, it's nice to have. We've had a good year, we also bred a horse called Jin Jin [sold for €4,000 at this sale four years ago] who won a Group 2 and was second in a couple of others in Germany, as well as Court House, who was second in a Group 2 in Dubai at the start of the year. We still have his dam."

Callanan has some other high-class names on his ledger, such as Good Girl, who won the Hilary Needler and the Weatherbys Super Sprint in 2001 for Tim Easterby, as well as Mount Abu, who landed Group 1 honours for John Gosden in the Prix de la Foret that same year.

It all adds up for an operation which is continuing to punch above its weight.

"We're just a small stud, we keep six to seven mares and do a bit of consigning and boarding," said Callanan. "We've eight in at the November Foal Sale as well, there's a nice Profitable colt out of Rosy Morning, a nice Zoffany colt and a Blue Point filly. There's some very nice foals, so we're we're looking forward to it."

The Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday, following the Autumn HIT Sale on Monday.
