Pearl Secret filly tops trade as September Sale gets underway
Ollie O'Donoghue reports from the opening yearling session
The Goffs UK September Sale got off to a subdued start on Tuesday as 58 of the 92 lots on offer changed hands for total receipts of £272,800, at an average spend of £4,700 and median of £4,000, while the clearance rate stood at 63 per cent.
The most expensive lot was a May-foaled filly by Pearl Secret out of Breda Castle, an unraced half-sister to the Listed scorer Queen Of Ice and the stakes-placed Ice Gala.
Paul Murphy signalled his winning bid of £20,000 from his position on the upper walkway and explained: "She's been bought for a French client who likes his first-crop sires. We're undecided on a trainer and she could stay here or go over to France."
The filly - who was consigned by Salcey Forest Stud - hails from the wider family of the Lillie Langtry Stakes winner Pilaster and the Windsor Forest and May Hill Stakes heroine Spacious, both of whom carried the colours of owner-breeder Cheveley Park Stud.
"I raced this colt's half-brother Big Ace (by Kuroshio)," said Macleod. "He won at Hamilton for us before we sold him abroad, and we noticed him in the catalogue."
Macleod's new purchase traces back to Palacegate Episode, the champion older mare in Germany in 1994 whose daughter Halland Park Lass produced the dual Group 1-winning juvenile and sire Dutch Art.
