Galileo hogged the headlines over the weekend but it has not been a bad couple of days for Siyouni either as Devil became the stallion’s third Group winner within 24 hours in the Prix Eclipse at Maisons-Laffitte.

Sottsass had begun the sequence for the Haras de Bonneval resident when extricating himself from trouble and advertising his Arc credentials in the Prix Niel before the admirable sprinter City Light chipped in with the Prix du Pin on the same card at Longchamp on Sunday

Devil is a member of Siyouni’s juvenile crop and had made a winning start for Freddy Head at Deauville in late July before finishing last in the Prix Morny.

On better ground and dropping in class for the six-furlong Group 3 event, he required some scrubbing along by Maxime Guyon and was on top in the closing stages to finish half a length in front of Lope De Vega filly Nina Ballerina, representing Ed Walker and Oisin Murphy and who was bidding to make it three straight scores in the race for British runners.

Devil is a Wertheimer homebred and the first foal out of Burma Sea, who was bought outside the ring for €350,000 at the Arqana Arc Sale in 2015.

The mare is from a distinguished Gestut Ammerland line whose dam, Bougainvillea, is a sister of well-travelled Group 1 winner Borgia and a half-sister of German Derby and Coronation Cup scorer Boreal. Burma Sea herself won a conditions event for Andre Fabre in the Ammerland silks and was Listed placed at Longchamp.

The Wertheimers have two more of her progeny so far, a yearling filly by Invincible Spirit called Ivresse and a Camelot colt foal, provisionally named Sober.
