New territory for Prince Gibraltar with first winner on the track in France

High-class middle-distance performer Prince Gibraltar clinched a first winner of his stallion career with a sharp two-year-old at Marseille Borely on Tuesday.

Now one of a handful of sires at Haras de Montaigu in western France, Prince Gibraltar was a juvenile Group 1 scorer himself for Jean-Claude Rouget and his owner-breeder Jean-Francois Gribomont in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud before placing in both the French Derby and Grand Prix de Paris. He hit the mark at the top level again at four in the Grosser Preis von Baden.

Prince Gibraltar has 51 potential representatives from his first crop and Marselha Prince was one of a couple who had been seen out already, finishing fourth and then sixth at the same seaside track before sticking his head out to take the six-furlong Prix Joseph Troggi from Khalhinkha. Prince Gibraltar also supplied the fifth-placed home in newcomer Redness.

Out of the Whipper mare Moune, Marselha Prince had been bought for €15,000 by his trainer, Cedric Rossi, at the Osarus Yearling Sale in La Teste. That was a little above the average price of his yearlings to have gone through the ring during 2018 for Prince Gibraltar, who was at a fee of €3,000 for this year.
