Little Logician! First foal by St Leger hero on the ground for Stanley Clegg

The first foal by Shade Oak Stud's 2019 St Leger hero Logician has arrived, a colt out of the Kayf Tara mare Angela's Hope owned by Stanley Clegg's Chantry Bloodstock.

Foaled at Bill Page and Anna Small's yard, the foal is the first out of the eight-year-old, a full-sister to the dual Grade B chase winner The Long Mile and from the family of successful chasers Sound Man, Master Of The Hall and Pairofbrowneyes.

Logician retired to stand at Shade Oak after a career with John Gosden that saw him land the Doncaster Classic and Great Voltigeur Stakes for owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah.

The striking grey is by Frankel and hails from one of Juddmonte's finest families, being out of Scuffle, a winning and stakes-placed Daylami half-sister to Group 1 sires Bated Breath and Cityscape, and from the family of the great Xaar.

Logician, a full-brother to stakes winner Collide and a half-brother to five further winners including Graded victress and EP Taylor Stakes second Suffused, stood his first season in 2022 at a fee of £4,000, one that is unchanged for this season.

Unraced as a juvenile, the now seven-year-old made up for that by winning all five of his races at three.

His career-defining St Leger win saw him defeat a field that included subsequent Group 1 winners Sir Dragonet and Technician, as well as Group winners Sir Ron Priestley, Nayef Road and Dashing Willoughby.

Connections decided not to have a crack at the Arc following his St Leger success, and unfortunately Logician then had to fight a life-threatening battle with peritonitis.

He eventually returned to the track as a four-year-old at the St Leger meeting, and while he won that match race in a conditions stakes, he was unable to recapture his best form in three subsequent runs, including two as a five-year-old.

He was retired the winner of six of his nine runs and with earnings of more than half a million.

Logician covered a book of 183 mares in his first season at Peter and Emma Hockenhull's Shropshire operation.
