Leading breeze-up vendor stocks up at Osarus Yearling Sale
Haras du Saubouas came away with the €120,000 sale-topper
Haras du Saubouas - who sold the most expensive lot at the Osarus Breeze-Up Sale the past four years - were busy stocking up on future talent in advance of next year's sales at the company's Yearling Sale at La Teste-de-Buch on Wednesday, eventually coming away with the sale-topping Siyouni colt for €120,000 and two other pricey purchases.
While Siyouni fillies proved all the rage at Arqana, it was his sons who have been making the biggest impression at BBAG - where a Siyouni colt shared top billing at €280,000 - and Osarus.
Saubouas's new recruit, already named Diktar, is out of a Green Desert half-sister to Middle Park Stakes heroine Primo Valentino and Cherry Hinton Stakes scorer Dora Carrington, the dam of Julienas, a Grade 3 winner in Australia, where Siyouni colt Aylmerton landed the Group 2 Todman Stakes.
City Light is another son of the sire to excel, having finished second to Merchant Navy in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Paul Basquin of Haras du Saubouas said: "He was a nice son of Siyouni, who's a proven stallion and one of the best in Europe, and the dam is by Green Desert and from a very good family.
"We will send him to Saubouas Stud in the southwest of France for breaking and pre-training and then we will see whether we take him to the breeze-up sales or race him."
Spending spree
Saubouas also has a connection with another of its purchases on Wednesday, having broken in and pre-trained Harmless, the first stakes winner by first-season sire Anodin.
The operation went to €80,000 to secure a son of the sire and Listed-placed Numerous mare Footloose. The February-born colt, already named Wantobewithyou, hails from the same Aga Khan family as Group 1 talents Daylami, Dalakhani and 2015 Dubai Sheema Classic scorer Dolniya.
Saubouas required an extra €5,000 to take home the only No Nay Never offering in the catalogue - a half-sister to Listed scorer Under The Radar out of the Listed-placed Fast Lane Lili, whose granddam is a sibling to the exceptional Urban Sea and King's Best.
Urban Sea appears in the pedigree of this year's Derby winner Masar - who is inbred 3x4 to her - and Athena, who is out of her talented daughter Cherry Hinton, who was fifth in the Oaks.
Another descendant of Urban Sea who looks to have a shot in Group 1 company is Just Wonderful, who ran away with the Group 3 Flame Of Tara Stakes for two-year-old fillies at the Curragh on Saturday.
Havana good time
Havana Grey rewarded his connections for keeping the Prix Morny runner-up in training at three when winning the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh in July, and a filly by the same sire, Havana Gold, made €105,000 to Tina Rau, acting on behalf of trainer Nicolas Clement.
The April-born filly is out of Lope De Vega mare Exceedingly Rare, who left a lasting impression on Rau when winning a Chantilly maiden over 1400m for Mikel Delzangles on her sole start as a juvenile in 2014.
"We've bought her on spec, I should think we'll have her filled relatively quickly," said Rau. "We know the family well. We really liked her dam as a yearling and she was very talented but did her pelvis and never quite recovered. We reckoned she was black-type class.
"This filly was all class, a great walker, very correct, nothing not to like about her."
Exceedingly Rare is a half-sister to Italian Listed winner Sunday Nectar and shares her granddam with Gwenseb, who has produced no fewer than four stakes winners at stud.
Marc Antoine Berghgracht also made his presence felt at Osarus, going to €90,000 to secure a Kheleyf half-sister to Group 3 Prix du Bois winner Cosachope, named Mila Chop.
