Magic Wand has the pedigree and price-tag of a potential Oaks winner
Galileo filly topped the Arqana August Yearling Sale at €1.4 million
Magic Wand on Wednesday confirmed for the first time on the racecourse what her pedigree and price-tag have always suggested: that she is a leading contender for next month's Investec Oaks.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained filly had finished seventh and third on her first two starts, failing to get within six lengths of the winner each time, before she broke her maiden in flamboyant style with a three-and-a-half-length victory in the Listed Arkle Finance Cheshire Oaks at Chester.
The runner-up Forever Together, a stablemate to the winner and a Galileo sister to Fillies' Mile heroine Together Forever and half-sister to Prix Jean Prat winner Lord Shanakill, could also enter Classic calculations.
Magic Wand cost owners Coolmore and Markus Jooste an auction-topping €1.4 million when she was offered at the Arqana August Yearling Sale in 2016, the reason being she is an outstanding physical specimen with a fine pedigree.
She was bred in partnership by Ecurie des Monceaux and Lady O'Reilly's Skymarc Farm out of the Listed-winning Dansili mare Prudenzia, who has now produced four winners headed by Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita, a daughter of Montjeu who became the most expensive horse ever sold at auction in Ireland when bought by Coolmore at Goffs for €6 million.
Prudenzia is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Pacifique out of Ecurie des Monceaux foundation mare Platonic, who is herself a half-sister to stakes winners Lion Sands and Pongee.
It does Magic Wand's Oaks credentials no harm that as well as being a three-parts sister to Chicquita, this is also the family of one of the most impressive female Epsom Classic winners of the new millennium – 2006 heroine Alexandrova.
Prudenzia has been a real cash machine for her owners, as she has had four yearlings sell for seven-figures at Arqana, while Chicquita was originally sold by them for €600,000 and last year's yearling by Galileo was sold to Magic Wand's connections for €950,000.
Prudenzia has a yearling colt by Muhaarar, while she was covered by Dubawi last year and was due to visit Galileo again this season after foaling.
Magic Wand is certainly by the right sire for Epsom Classic success.
Galileo was of course a Derby winner himself and as well as supplying three Derby winners at stud – New Approach, Ruler Of The World and Australia – he has two Oaks winners on his record in Minding and Was.
Galileo has actually featured in the pedigrees of five of the last six Oaks winners. As well as being sire of Was (2012) and Minding (2016), he is paternal grandsire of Talent (by New Approach, 2013) and Enable (by Nathaniel, 2017) and maternal grandsire of Qualify (by Fastnet Rock, 2015).
The odd one out in that timeframe, Taghrooda, is by Galileo's half-brother Sea The Stars.
Moreover, Magic Wand is bred on the same Galileo-Dansili cross as last year's narrowly beaten Derby runner-up Cliffs Of Moher.
