High-class Hawwaam set for stallion career at Wilgerbosdrift Farm

Shadwell's high-class South African performer Hawwaam is set to retire to Mary Slack's Wilgerbosdrift Farm in the Western Cape for the 2021 breeding season.

A multiple Grade 1 winner in South Africa, the son of Silvano signed off for Mike de Kock with consecutive top-level strikes at Turffontein last June and joined the William Haggas stable in Newmarket. He still holds several entries at Royal Ascot.

Hawwaam, a son of South African champion sire Silvano, is from an outstanding family produced by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein's mare Halfway To Heaven.

He is a sibling of two more Grade 1 winners in the shape of Rainbow Bridge and Golden Ducat and was bought for R1,000,000 (£52,000/€61,000) from the Bloodstock South Africa 2017 National Yearling Sale.

Among those to welcome the news was De Kock, whose website reported that the late Hamdan Al Maktoum's Shadwell was retaining a major stake in the horse and were planning to support him at stud.

"We would like to thank Sheikha Hissa and the family for their ongoing support and look forward to seeing Hawwaam return to South Africa," the stable's website said.
