Galileo's sons take centre stage as Australia's Point Lonsdale claims Chesham

Australia became the fifth sire son of Galileo to supply a winner at this year's Royal Ascot when the hugely promising Point Lonsdale maintained his unbeaten record in the Listed Chesham Stakes.

Bred at Croom House Stud under the Epona Bloodstock banner, Point Lonsdale is the ninth foal out of Sweepstake, a daughter of Acclamation who won twice for Richard Hannon snr before finishing third in the 2007 Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes.

She switched to the US stable of David Carroll the following year but was repatriated to Ireland having been purchased by Epona Bloodstock for $280,000 at the Keeneland November Sale in 2011.

Point Lonsdale is one of five winners out of Sweepstake along with his five-year-old brother Broome, who came within a length and a half of bringing up a famous family double when runner-up to Wonderful Tonight in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes later on Saturday's card.

Australia, who spent the 2021 breeding season at €25,000, is now the sire of 29 stakes performers, a list that includes 13 Group winners and six Listed scorers. His stud record is headed by three Group/Grade 1 winners, namely Galileo Chrome, Mare Australis and Order Of Australia.

Point Lonsdale, who is owned by the Coolmore partners and Georg Von Opel's Westerberg, is the most expensive foal produced by Sweepstake having cost MV Magnier 575,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The mare also has a yearling filly by Lope De Vega and a Frankel colt foal at foot.

As well as Australia, the other sons of Galileo to make an impact at Royal Ascot are: Frankel, the meeting's leading sire who landed a day one double with Juan Elcano and Amtiyaz before Mohaafeth struck in the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes; Gleneagles notched a big winner when daughter Loving Dream claimed the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes; Nathaniel sired Duke of Edinburgh Stakes winner Quickthorn; while Teofilo supplied Gold Cup hero Subjectivist.

The perennial champion sire also featured as the great grandsire of St James's Palace Stakes hero Poetic Flare through New Approach's son Dawn Approach, while Galileo also filled the same position in the pedigree of Windsor Castle Stakes scorer Chipotle, who is by Teofilo's son Havana Gold.

Moreover, Galileo himself sired Prince of Wales's Stakes victress Love, while he also featured as damsire of Golden Gates Stakes scorer Foxes Tales and Queen Alexandra victor Stratum meaning the son of Sadler's Wells appeared in the pedigree of 12 Royal Ascot winners in 2021.

Point Lonsdale's success continued a big week for Acclamation, with the Rathbarry Stud stalwart also represented as damsire of Britannia Stakes scorer Perotto and Wokingham winner Rohaan. With three winners and one second, Acclamation joined Pivotal at the head of the Royal Ascot broodmare sires' table.

He also appeared as grandsire of Dark Angel's three winners, namely Coventry Stakes victor Berkshire Shadow, Duke of Cambridge Stakes heroine Indie Angel and impressive Royal Hunt Cup scorer Real World.
