Munnings fee set to career-high $100,000 as Ashford reveals 2023 roster
Coolmore America has three new recruits for next season
Top ten North American sire Munnings, the sire of multiple Grade 1 winner Jack Christopher, will stand for a career-high $100,000 next year, with Coolmore America's Ashford Stud releasing its roster and fees for 2023.
A Grade 1-placed, Grade 2 winner, Munnings has earned his way into the upper tier of the most successful stallions. The son of champion sprinter Speightstown entered stud at $12,500 and a parade of durable elite runners that followed has steadily elevated the sire's profile among the top breeders.
His first crop included Grade 1 winners I'm a Chatterbox and El Deal, along with multiple Graded winner Om. Munnings has 62 black-type winners (seven per cent from named foals of racing age), which includes 2021 Canadian champion three-year-old filly Munnyfor Ro.
Jack Christopher is a three-time Grade 1 winner who has won five of his six starts and is expected to be a leading contender in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland.
Multiple leading sire Uncle Mo continues to lead the Ashford roster at $150,000. The son of Indian Charlie is currently the fifth-leading North American sire by progeny earnings and the co-third-leading sire by number of Graded/Group stakes winners with seven.
Ashford adds three new stallions to the 2023 roster: 2021 champion two-year-old colt Corniche; Preakness Stakes winner Early Voting; and multiple Grade 1 turf sprinter Golden Pal.
Corniche, a son of Quality Road, was undefeated at two. He won his debut at Del Mar by four and a half lengths and followed with wins in the American Pharoah Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He suffered his only loss in the Amsterdam Stakes at Saratoga, where he suffered a career-ending injury to a hind joint. He was retired with $1,263,500 in earnings. He will enter stud at $30,000.
Early Voting is a son of leading sire Gun Runner. He won his only start at two and kicked off his sophomore campaign with a win in the Withers Stakes at Aqueduct.
In his second start at three he was runner-up in the Wood Memorial Stakes. Trainer Chad Brown chose to skip the Kentucky Derby to have a fresh horse for the Preakness and was rewarded with a length and a quarter win over Epicenter, who ran second in the Derby. He retired with $2,940,639 in earnings and will enter stud at $25,000.
Golden Pal has one more major task ahead of him before he retires, going for a third Breeders' Cup win in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, which he won last year.
The four-year-old son of Uncle Mo has won eight of 12 career starts, which include winning the 2020 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland. He has won seven Graded races and comes into the Breeders' Cup off a win in the Woodford Stakes at Keeneland. He has career earnings of $1,815,131. His stud fee will be set after the Breeders' Cup.
