It was just four years ago that the Stronach Group unveiled grand plans to launch the Pegasus World Cup, an innovative event funded by million dollar sponsorship slots that would ultimately result in a first year prize fund of $12 million.
Staged at Gulfstream Park in Florida, the inaugural race run in January 2017 was everything it was envisaged to be, fulfilling the hype as a showdown between champions Arrogate and California Chrome - Arrogate romped home, prior to a successful assault on the Dubai World Cup.
The following year, Gun Runner closed his championship career with a similarly impressive winning performance while last year’s addition of the $1m Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational treated fans to a memorable victory by Bricks And Mortar, who would go on to sweep through the year unbeaten in six starts to end 2019 as North America’s Horse of the Year.
