There are myriad ways to assess stallion performance, but few, if any, are infallible. The British and Irish championship is decided by prize-money, a measure that is easily skewed by bumper purses (or a paucity of returns) in certain races.

Similarly, the raw number of winners does not take into account quality, nor does volume of stakes success tell the whole tale as that does not account for opportunity. However, help is at hand.

Ratings offer the best reflection of ability, and the statistics page on the Racing Post website carries tables that order sires by percentage of progeny with a peak Racing Post Rating (RPR) of 80+, 100+ or 115+ in Britain and Ireland.
